Character name: Vera Jane Kelly

Relationship to Canon Character(s): Descended from Diablo from a mistress of his about two hundred years back. Vera doesn’t know this but currently she’s the last living scion of his line with any Alchemical talent.

Kind of a mix between primary and secondary dependant on the time I have and my health.

New character Dreamwidth journal (if already created): magnum_opus

Base of operations: Her dorm? Knows of a few abandoned warehouses for the really big stuff.

Physical description (face, build, weight): Vera is on the thin side, with slightly tawny skin and black hair. Her eyes stand out, being a pale gray. She is built like someone who spends more time reading than doing anything else. She has a wiry strength though, coming from studying fencing.

She wears her black hair long, with bangs covering her forehead. She can look really mousey and unassuming if you don’t make eye contact. Her gaze is sure and intelligent, not quite fitting with her somewhat quirky demeanor. Her clothing tends towards Gothic, though she occasionally favors bright and eye popping colors. She also has an ouroboros tattoo on her lower back and a flamel cross on her left arm.

Vera is nineteen, and looks the part of a girl in her late teens, if a bit odd.

Abilities: Vera Jane Kelly is an Alchemist. Drawing circles and blending magic and science, she can create a wide variety of effects by changing the state of, and rearranging, matter and energy. Different circles do different things, and the ones she uses most often she’ll draw on herself with henna paint to save herself the time of having to draw it out on sight.

She can make weapons, convert matter to energy and contain and control magical artifacts. As alchemy blends both magic and science, she isn’t a master of either, but has a fundamental - if self taught - understanding of magic and is majoring in bio-chemistry in college.

Given Alchemy works within the laws of physics, Vera can not create something from nothing. Objects she makes contain the same amount of mass (in one form or another) as was used to make them. I sword, for example, fashioned out of a stop sign would be the exact same mass as the sign that made it.

When Vera performs a transmutation energy is released in the form of a bright flash of light and crackle of electricity. Rapid fire transmutations take a lot out of her, and she prefers to have had time to prepare and study so she knows the right ones to use going in. Matter to energy transmutations are particularly unstable and hard to control - though very explosive in their results.

Because Alchemy relies on circles for the magical jump start of chemical transmutation, Vera also has a very good knowledge of actual magical circles as well and can draw them to contain people or things who are unnatural and/or magical in nature.

Yes, she can turn lead to gold. Yes, she has tried to sell it. She never speaks of what happened next~.

She can also fence on a national level.

Weaknesses and flaws: Vera is self taught, meaning she can - and does - screw up. On minor transmutations the rebound is minimal. On a larger transmutations the rebound could be disfiguring and/or fatal. She’s also limited by the amount of energy she can channel. Presently she can transmute a maximum of a ton of matter - about as much as your average car.

Vera is also very driven, and if something gets in the way of her goal - even if it’s a friend - she will run them over in her drive to get to where she’s going. She’s smart and ambitious and often has a very hard time actually understanding and connecting to other people.

Because alchemy relies on circles to be ‘cast’ if she doesn't have something to write with, she’s just another girl who happens to be good with a sword and a bit more understanding of the “occult” than most. To try to prevent this she always carries eyeliner for use on her skin and chalk for use on everything else.

Alignment (villain, hero etc): Hero... kind of? Gavin suggested the horror team when they get up and going. In the end Vera’s one real allegiance is long term goal. Woe betide any who get in her way.

Relatives: Her parents, both living and still married, though her father has a rather prolific alcohol abuse problem and her mother is still recovering from a mental breakdown. And a little sister, deceased, who died just over a year ago in an accident caused by a drunk driver. (Parents: Jacob and Rhonda. Sister: Rachel.)

Backstory: Vera Kelly was born the oldest of two children of a renowned doctor and a pharmaceutical chemist. Her family, well off on NYC, would be considered filthy rich anywhere else. She’s spent her life in prep schools of the upper crust, having her intelligence challenged by the best teachers and tutors her parents could pay for.

No matter what she did, though, she was always second best to her little sister. One year her junior, Rachel was amazing at everything she tried - music, fencing, science, art.

Jealous, Vera went out of her way to find something she could do but her sister could not. Studying, she stumbled on an old book about alchemy written by one Esteban De Ablo. Not one of the new age books on the subject it was written in code that had at first seemed normal until she noticed patterns in the text and went about cracking it.

The first book was full of beginner's transmutations and taught her basic circles, as well as how to change lead into gold. Instead of confiding in her little sister, Vera went and threw this back into Rachel's face as something she was finally better at than her. Rachel didn’t believe it and when Vera did a transmutation right infront of her little sister to prove it, Rachel accused her of sleight of hand and wanting to make a fool out of her.

The two sisters entered a fierce competition to show each other up in front of their parents. Their parents unwittingly egged this on by encouraging both of them to succeed at something the other failed at, though Vera disguised her alchemy as numerous other things in front of her parents.

This continued for a good two years, each finding ways to one up the other, until about a year ago when Rachel’s life was cut short by a drunk driver. It took that to break the cycle of petty confrontation and one-ups she and her sister had gotten in to. And after Rachel was gone and Vera’s family life became a downward spiral, Vera realized just how much they were all held together by her sister.

She resolved, at that point, to find what many books pointed to as one of the main holy grails of alchemy - human transmutation. Which would, in theory, allow her to recreate her sister’s body and bring her back from the dead.

The last year, Vera has been pulling together everything she’ll need to undergo the transmutation required. It has forced her to turn to less than legal means to get all the research material she needs. Many of the books are one of a kind, owned by everyone from Isaac Newton to Tycho Brahe. She’s also had to take a head first plunge into the mystical end to work out what one needs to have to re-create a human soul.

It’s this goal that drives Vera, and nothing will get in her way.
